In light of the evolving global trade landscape, the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER) and the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI) will co-host a joint symposium to examine the multifaceted impacts of U.S. new tariff policy under President Donald Trump. The symposium will explore the economic consequences of the tariff measures imposed during the Trump administration, with particular focus on their effects on bilateral trade flows, export performance of individual firms, and broader implications for supply chain security in an era of heightened geopolitical tensions.
The re-emergence of protectionist measures, particularly unilateral tariffs on strategic sectors, has triggered a reassessment of trade and industrial strategies in both Taiwan and Japan. Meanwhile, the intensifying U.S.–China rivalry highlights the need for greater supply chain resilience. This symposium offers a platform for experts from both countries to exchange policy analyses, empirical findings, and strategic insights, with the goal of shaping more resilient and forward-looking economic policies.
